Timings: During summer the temple timing is 8 am to 6pm. The winter timing is 9am to 5pm. Mondays are closed days.
The Lotus temple is one of the most famous temples to visit in Delhi. The architecture of this temple in itself looks very unique. Even if you are travelling by air you can recognize the unique architecture of this temple from up above. Currently Lotus Temple is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is also one of the world’s most visited temples. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, there is a daily footfall of 10000 people in this temple.
The construction of the temple began in 1970 and it was completed and inaugurated in 1986. A Bahai Practitioner from Hyderabad donated all his life savings to fund the building of this temple. The temple looks like a lotus as the name suggests. There are 27 petals of this lotus structure. In Bahai faith the number 9 is considered to be holy. The temple therefore has 9 sides to it and there are 3 groups of 9 petals each making it a total of 27. There are also 9 gardens and 9 pools inside the temple complex.
This was Delhi’s first temple to run partially on solar power. The illuminated temple looks magnificent as a structure. There are no deities or images of any Gods or Goddesses inside the temple as the Bahais were believers of human oneness and human unity. The temple prayer hall is calm and serene.

Swaminarayan Akshardham
Location: Noida Mor, Pandav Nagar, New Delhi

The Swaminarayan Akshardham is one of the most popular temples in Delhi. This temple is the world’s largest Hindu Temple. The aesthetically pleasing huge structure and magnificent architecture looks exquisite. The temple is made of pink and white marvel that is made from Rajasthani sandstone and Carrara marble. It took 5 years for 7000 artisans and 3000 volunteers to finish the construction of this temple.
The temple has shrines of Hindu gods inside. Photography is strictly not allowed on the temple premise. Also they have a strict dress code where everyone needs to cover their chest, shoulders and upper arms and lowers should be below the knees. The temple has sarongs available at the counter that you can borrow in case your dress is inappropriate.
Akshardham also has exhibitions. The entry in the temple is free but there is a fee that you need to pay for all three exhibitions. For adults the charge is Rs.250, for children of 4-11 years the fee is Rs. 150 and children under 4years are free. The charge includes all the three exhibitions like the 3D Show, a giant screen movie about the early life of Swaminarayan and a cultural boat ride of 12minutes.
The water show here is the most popular. A story from the Ken Upanishad is depicted here using underwater flames, lasers, music and video projectors and live actors. It starts at 7pm everyday and you have to arrive at least 30minutes early otherwise you won’t be allowed to enter. The fee is Rs. 90 for adults and Rs. 60 for children of 4-11 years. Children below 4 years are free.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
Location: Hanuman Road Area, Connaught Place, New Delhi

This Gurudwara in Delhi is dedicated to the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishnan. It was previously a bungalow owned by 17th century ruler Raja Jai Singh. Guru Har Krishnan used to live there during the smallpox epidemic and administered first aid to the sick. Later he died of the same disease and Raja Jai Singh built this Gurudwara in his memory. The gate of this Gurudwara is open for all. People can take a walk around the Sarovar in a clockwise direction as per the tradition. This Sarovar or holy pond is believed to have healing properties in it as Guru Har Krishnan used to heal the sick with this water. You can sit and listen to live kirtan, visit the museum and have langar. The Halwa Prasad is given to everyone visiting there.
Langar is served in almost all gurudwaras, which is free vegetarian food. People from all age groups, all religions and faiths can come and eat together. Bangla Sahib Gurudwara feeds more than 35000 people daily and on special days the number goes up by 3 times. There are two main halls in the Gurudwara and the bigger one can accommodate around 900 people at a time. The kitchen is huge and automated and prepares food in huge quantities. The langar is served daily in the afternoon and evening and on Sundays it is served the whole day.
It is mandatory for both men and women to cover their head before entering here. Shoes should be removed as well. Photography is not allowed around the Sarovar and inside the prayer hall.

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple also known as Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir is one of the most popular temples in Delhi. This is almost like one of the identifying places in the whole of Delhi and the reason is the 108 feet tall Hanuman Ji Statue that is visible from far away. This unique temple in Delhi also has a unique entrance resembling the open mouth of Lord Hanuman. Inside the temple there are different levels with shrines of Devi Parvati, Ganesha, Lord Ram and Krishna.
The temple was built by Mahant Nagababa Sevagir Maharaj after he saw a vision of Lord Hanuman. It took several years for the construction of this temple and was finally finished in 2007. The main attraction here is the gigantic Hanuman Statue that opens his chest displaying images of Lord Rama and Devi Sita on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8:15 am and 8:15 pm. Laxminarayan Mandir (Birla Mandir)
Location: Mandir Marg Road, Gole Market, New Delhi

Timings: 4:30 am to 9 pm daily. The temple remains closed from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm daily.
At the time of its construction in 1939 the Laxminarayan Temple was the largest Hindu Temple in Delhi. The temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on the condition that the entry will not be restricted for the lower caste which was prevalent during the pre independence India. This is one of the most prominent temples in Delhi. The temple was one the first temples built by the Birla Family and therefore also known as the Birla Mandir. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Narayan and Devi Lakhshmi. Also there are separate temples dedicated to Krishna, Lord Shiva and Buddha.
The architecture of this temple is beautiful with stone carvings and marble detailing. The artisans were specially called from Varanasi for the construction of this temple. There is a fountain, extensive lawns and statues of various animals that depict different aspects of Hinduism.

Shri Aadya Katyani Shaktipeeth Mandir
Location: Mehrauli- Gurgaon Road, Mehrauli, New Delhi

This temple is another temple that is huge, covering an area of 70 acres. The chief presiding deity is Goddess Katyayani. You can notice a distinct mix of North Indian as well as South Indian style of architecture in this temple. The temple is made of marble and stone lattice work known as Jaali. Devi Shakti has 9 avatars, Devi Katyani being one of them. The inside of the temple has a prayer hall with 9 goddesses and their 9 chairs and a bedroom with a silver bed. The bedroom also has a sword and a dressing table. The ceilings are brightly painted and look spectacular.
The main festival is Navaratri which is celebrated here with much vigor. Thousands of devotees across the country visit here daily during the festival.
