Origin of Jagadhatri puja in Chandannagar

Typically Jagadjhatri Puja is a festival popular in West Bengal. It was first started during the rule of Raja Krishnachandra Roy of Nadia. At that time Nawab Alivardi once demanded 12 lakh rupees from Raja Krishnachandra. However he was unable to give that and therefore he was held captive as a prisoner in Murshidabad. After he was liberated he returned to Krishnanagar and witnessed Visarjan or immersion of Goddess Durga. He was keen on celebrating Durga Puja but realized that the time for that was over already. Later after a few days Goddess Jagadhatri appeared in his dream and asked him to worship her on the next Shukla Navami. That’s when the Jagadhatri Puja was started in Krishnanagar just after a month from Durga Puja.

Furthermore, Dewan Indranarayan Chowdhury from Chandannagar was really impressed with the traditional puja of Devi Jagadhatri. He himself wanted to celebrate that too and therefore started the first puja in Chandannagar. This is the oldest Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar. Location: Subhas Pally South, Khalisani, Chandannagar, West Bengal

This is one of the popular Jagadhatri Puja pandals in Chandannagar. The pandal is very close to the Chandannagar Railway Station. You can even walk for 2 minutes from the station to reach there. This year in 2023 the puja is going to celebrate the 55^th year of their Jagadhatri puja. The pandal is opened from Panchami, one day before Sashthi. So you can surely visit here this year.

Chandannagar Helapukur Sarbojonin Jagadhatri Puja

Location: Helapukur Road, Sarishapara, Chandannagar, West Bengal
