Origin of Jagadhatri puja in Chandannagar

Typically Jagadjhatri Puja is a festival popular in West Bengal. It was first started during the rule of Raja Krishnachandra Roy of Nadia. At that time Nawab Alivardi once demanded 12 lakh rupees from Raja Krishnachandra. However he was unable to give that and therefore he was held captive as a prisoner in Murshidabad. After he was liberated he returned to Krishnanagar and witnessed Visarjan or immersion of Goddess Durga. He was keen on celebrating Durga Puja but realized that the time for that was over already. Later after a few days Goddess Jagadhatri appeared in his dream and asked him to worship her on the next Shukla Navami. That’s when the Jagadhatri Puja was started in Krishnanagar just after a month from Durga Puja.

Furthermore, Dewan Indranarayan Chowdhury from Chandannagar was really impressed with the traditional puja of Devi Jagadhatri. He himself wanted to celebrate that too and therefore started the first puja in Chandannagar. This is the oldest Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar. Later in time the Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar gained momentum and became one of the most popular celebrations in West Bengal. People from all around the world come and visit the Pujas in Chandannagar. There are a total of around 150 puja committees in Chandannagar.

However, out of all of them 50 committees are selected by a lottery for a grand procession. With elaborate lighting and decoration this procession is one of a kind of Carnival. Surely the procession of the Puja is another highlight in Chandannagar that the people enjoy.

Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja lighting is another focal point of the whole celebration. The special lighting was first introduced in 1965 by Sridhar Das. Later it became a center for running lights. From 1990 LED lights were bought from Korea, Germany and Japan to make these lights. Numerous colourful bulbs are attached to wires and depict various scenes or animals and even proverbs. A whole community is attached for the production of these lights. Furthermore they are even exported to other areas as well.
